Our Calling to San Lucas Tolimán

After making four mission trips to San Lucas Tolimán and witnessing the deep poverty in the surrounding villages, my daughter Melody, my granddaughter Katie, and I felt God’s clear leading to do more.

Many families in this area struggle daily to meet even their most basic needs. Some survive on only one meal a day—others go without. Their homes are often made of corrugated metal with holes in the walls, dirt floors, no running water, and no sanitation. Opportunities to improve their living conditions are few, and the need is great.

Out of this burden and calling, we founded Hopeful Hearts of San Lucas, a nonprofit ministry where 100% of donations go directly to helping families in San Lucas Tolimán. Every gift is used to bring hope, provide food, improve living conditions, and share God’s love in practical ways. Your donation is also tax deductible.

We humbly ask that you prayerfully consider partnering with us. Please don’t turn away—give as generously and as often as you can. Your support truly makes a difference.

Thank you, from the people of Guatemala and the founders of Hopeful Hearts of San Lucas.

— Wayne Combs

Wayne Combs

I am 77 years old, blessed to be married to my wonderful wife, Nancy. Together, we have 4 daughters, 11 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. I was raised in church since I was just 9 days old, and at the age of 16, I answered God’s call to ministry. Over the years, I have had the privilege of speaking in churches, leading Bible study groups, and pastoring congregations.

Even while serving in local ministry, my heart was always drawn to foreign missions. That calling has taken me to Ecuador, Haiti, and Guatemala. My most recent trip to Guatemala stirred something deep within me — a stronger compassion and a clear sense that God was leading me to do more to help those living in poverty there.

Together with my daughter, Melody, and my granddaughter, Katie, we founded Hopeful Hearts of San Lucas, a nonprofit ministry dedicated to serving the people of San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala. Our mission is to bring hope, practical support, and the love of Christ to families in need.

We invite you to partner with us — through prayer and financial support — as we work to make a difference in the lives of those in San Lucas Tolimán.

You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and our website. Together, we can help bring hope where it’s needed most.

Melody Goodwin

Hi! My name is Melody Goodwin, and I am a proud mother of three wonderful children — Dana, Maggie, and Max. I’ve been an Early Education Director for 28 years, and my passion has always been families and children.

In 2012, my family and I were blessed to be part of a Single Mom’s Ministry that provided us with housing, counseling, budgeting support, and so much more. During that time, my daughter and I were chosen to go on a mission trip to San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala. That first trip changed my life — the people of San Lucas won my heart forever.

My daughter later returned as a long-term volunteer, serving there for a year and a half. I’ve been back to Guatemala several more times, and on my last trip, my dad, my niece, and I felt called to do more. Together, we founded Hopeful Hearts of San Lucas, a nonprofit ministry dedicated to helping families in need through food, beds, and housing.

I am so excited to be part of this ministry and can’t wait to see all the wonderful families we will be able to help. Please join us — through donations and prayer — as we ask God to bless this ministry and the beautiful families of San Lucas Tolimán.

Katie Leiker

Hello, my name is Katie. I graduated from the University of Kansas in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. During my time at KU I developed a relationship with Christ and overtime He began to grow my heart for His people.

I took my first trip to San Lucas Tolimàn in January of 2020 and instantly fell in love with the people and their culture. I remember being shocked at how grateful and kind everyone was despite having so little. Their day to day lives are filled with a million more inconveniences and trials than mine and yet I never heard a single person complain or grumble about their current situations.

They are loving people and are constantly smiling despite the hardships they face. My goal in visiting San Lucas both times was to give to the people there; however I feel as though the people of San Lucas gave me something in return: more gratitude, more contentment, and more love for God’s people.

By creating Hopeful Hearts with my grandpa, Wayne, and my aunt, Melody, I hope to continue to support the people of San Lucas in whatever way I can. Every donation and prayer is appreciated. Thank you for your encouragement in our mission!
